Profile

As a faculty member of the Education & Reading Studies Department at MCC, I am an advocate for the department programs and support the initiatives offered through our department. 

As a faculty member of the early childhood education program at MCC, I teach early childhood classes. We have an incredible team of adjunct faculty who teach in the program. We currently have two scholarships that fully cover tuition, textbooks and course fees for students in the early childhood program. All early childhood classes at MCC use Open Educational Resources (OER). The Associates of Applied Sciences (AAS) in Early Childhood Education pathway is accredited through the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). 

MCC's first bachelor's program in Early Childhood Education- Dual Language which began in Fall 2023.

EEP312 Family, Community, and School Collaboration for Dual Language Learners - Birth to Age Eight 3 Credits

Examines multiple influences on the development of the dual language learner (birth to age eight). Considers foundational structure provided by and reinforced by the family. Recognizes multiple messages of value and power communicated through community structures. Includes strategies for relationship building between families, school, and community with a long term goal of encouraging dual language learners.

Prerequisites: C or better in EED200 or permission of Instructor and (formal admission to an undergraduate educator preparation program or declaration of the BA in Early Childhood Education - Dual Language program or permission of Department/Division).

EED255 Independent Study Portfolio Development and Writing for the Early Childhood Profession 3 Credits

Portfolio development, completion, and presentation skills designed for the individual student. Self-assessment and educational short-term and long-term planning, professional development, writing and critical learning included.

Prerequisites: A grade of C or better in completion of twelve (12) credit hours of EED Early Education coursework and permission of Program Coordinator.

EEP413 Reading Instructional Practices, Interventions, and Assessments - Birth through Adolescence 3 Credits

Overview of instructional practices, interventions, and assessments associated with reading instruction and the systematic teaching of phonics to children from birth through adolescence. Includes historical methods and current research in reading; research-based instructional practices; research based assessments and possible interventions; support provided by Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) and Response to Intervention (RTI). Focus on reading disabilities (dyslexia) and laws associated with reading disabilities for children from birth through adolescence.

EEP414 Science of Reading and Systematic Phonics Instruction for Birth through Adolescence 3 Credits

Overview of the science of reading with an emphasis on explicit instructional practices associated with research-based, systematic phonics instruction for children from birth through adolescence. Covers research-based on the science of reading related to the teaching of reading in the pre-K-8 school setting to include understanding reading research; essential components of reading instruction; implementation of effective methods for reading instruction; and alignment of reading instruction to systematic phonics instruction.
